Words like “grit,” “resilience,” and “determination” are often used in 2020, as everyone on the planet (literally) comes to grips with the effects of COVID-19 to varying degrees. These are excellent qualities for anyone to have. We’re encouraged to cultivate these strengths to safeguard our mental health and wellness during challenging times.

But even the strongest, most determined, and most resilient people among us have limitations. Why on earth, you may ask, would anyone decide to form — or join — a new and untested business, or nonprofit, or even a soccer team in the midst of a global pandemic?

For the answer, look no further than Richmond SOL FC. On a quiet Sunday morning in August 2020, as preliminary tryouts were held at MLK Field, many of the players met each other for the first time. A week later, more tryouts were held, the roster was determined, and practices began. A short time later, on October 10, the team took the field for the first time in a friendly scrimmage vs. the Elk Grove Blues (UPSL) in Elk Grove, California, about 85 miles from Richmond.

Although the final score wasn’t in Richmond SOL’s favor, what the fans saw on display was far more important than a score. Individually and collectively, we saw flashes of brilliance and creativity along with repeated defensive maneuvers and an offense that didn’t quit. A Richmond SOL goal midway through the second half, along with other opportunities, showed the power of this team to fight back from a deficit.

True to our city’s motto, this Richmond team is showing us its #PrideAndPurpose. At this unofficial debut we saw the emerging qualities of an excellent team in the making. We’re looking forward to the season ahead. #VamosRichmondSOL!
